John Martin

Westernport

John A. Martin  89 of Central AV , Westernport, MD went to be with his Lord on Aug. 30, 2021 at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, WV. He was born in Piedmont, WV on Jan. 23, 1932 and was the son of the late Thomas (Ganny) J. Martin and Mary Genevieve (Curren) Martin. He was preceded in death by his daughter -in-law, Tina (Montgomery) Martin.

John was a devoted member of Divine Mercy/Saint Peter in Westernport. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Sacristan and on the Pastoral council. He was a member of the Knight of Columbus, Piedmont Council # 685 and served as the Grand Knight in 1993-94.

He was a graduate of LaSalle High School in Cumberland, MD, Potomac State College in Keyser and served his country in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant from 1952 to 1956. He was a life member of Kelly-Mansfield Post # 52 American Legion in Piedmont. He retired from Westvaco Corp as a foreman in the Power Dept, with 34  years of service. He served as a volunteer at Moran Manor Nursing Home for many years and was the volunteer of the year. He loved all sports , especially  baseball, swimming and running. He loved the Pirates, Washington Redskins, and the WV Mountaineers. He coached many sports teams throughout his son’s life.

John was a kind and generous man , always with a smile on his face and a sense of humor. He was loved in his community and never met a stranger.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Janet (Fitzgerald) Martin and his children; Christa Harshbarger and husband Rick of Keyser, WV, John Thomas (Tuck) Martin and fiancé Rhonda Sears-Coffman of Keyser, WV, Jennifer Clem and husband Jay of Keyser, WV and his sister, Mary Margaret Meyers of Westernport, MD. He is also survived by his Grandchildren, Candice Gustafson, Brett Harshbarger and Trent Martin and two Great-Grandchildren.

There will be no public visitation, The family will receive friends at Saint Peter Church in Westernport on Friday from 10 AM until 11AM. A Mass of Christian  Burial will be celebrated at 11AM with Father Ed Hendrick as celebrant. Interment will follow at Saint Peter’s Cemetery in Westernport, MD.
