Doris Green

November 7, 1932 — May 26, 2018

Piedmont

Doris Edith Green 85, the Matriarch of the Nate Green family of Piedmont, West Virginia transitioned peacefully from this life to life everlasting on Saturday, May 26, 2018.  She was born in Davis, Tucker County, West Virginia along with her twin, Dorothy, on November 17, 1932, in the shadow of Blackwater Falls, to Robert and Louise Marks Redman.  During her formative years, attended the segregated school in Coketon, West Virginia.  She married Nate Green of Piedmont, who preceded her in death, and together they raised ten children who were their pride and joy. Their sons dominated basketball at Piedmont High School highlighted by multiple appearances at the state tournament in Charleston in the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in two championships and titles in 1966 and 1974. However, her grandchildren have accounted for no less than 8 state championships (at last count) in West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia representing the tenacity of the Green spirit.

Her husband, Nate, parents and step-mother, Alease Redman, Sisters Dorothy Twyman and June Ward, brother Roger Redman, and son, Christopher Jonathan Green, as well as her friends who became family Gene and Elaine Barmer and Betty Scott, ushering her through the pearly gates of heaven.

She worked at the Celanese in Creseaptown, MD. and T.J. Tots in Keyser, WV and was owner and operator of Green’s grocery store of Piedmont along with her husband Nate and their kids.  She was a dedicated member of the Women’s Auxiliary of VFW Post 5957 for many years.

While they are saddened by the transitioning of their dear mother, she has poured into them the love and faith necessary for them to carry on the rich legacy of the Green family.  Taking up the mantle are Nathaniel Richard “Richie” Green (Elaine) of Piedmont WV,  Robert E. “Woodie” Green  (Renee) of Akron, Ohio, Ethel “Star” Green  (Companion Danny Mays) of Oakland California, Chuck Green (Kitty) of Charleston WV, Toni A. Banks  (Tony) of Cumberland MD,  Tommy M. Green  (Companion Joanne Cook) of Keyser WV, Roger L Green (Tina) of Piedmont WV, Doris E. “Eve” Redman (Winston) of Keyser WV and Erick O. Green (Tamara) of Winchester VA, and daughter-in-Law, Kathy Green of Cumberland, MD.. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Lawrence (Lillie) Green of Goldsboro, NC.

She was blessed with a host of grand and great-grand children all of whom she loved and about whom she would express the awesomeness of the family which she and Nate created.   However, her family did not end there, seeing her first-cousins, twins Melvin and Mabel Marks, of Elkins would always put a smile on her face as they relived memories of their childhood.   She loved and was loved by all her nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews who, lovingly referred to her as Aunie.  Two special nieces, Peggy Foulks and Valerie Lewis, could not do enough for their Aunie.  Their unwavering attention to her every need is recognized and sincerely appreciated.    Her church family honored and revered her and that love and admiration was always reciprocated by their beloved Mother Green.

She gave her life to the Lord at the First Church of God In Christ of Piedmont and only looked back to bring others along.  She was a faithful member and was honored to serve as church mother following the passing of her beloved sister-in-law, Mother Mary Gilmore, having served as her assistant for many years.  Additionally, she served as a member of the trustee board and assistant church secretary.  Also held an evangelism missionary license from the greater WV jurisdiction.   Whenever she was called upon, she shared a word of prayer, scripture and encouragement.  She was “steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” 1 Cor 15:58.

Hers was a life well-lived.  While we will miss her, she did it God’s way and He deserves all the glory for the life she lived and the lives she touched.
